Riach architects were appointed to produce a design for this high specification garden room and kitchen refurbishment on a large detached house in Oxfordshire. With excellent views across open countryside, our brief was to make the most of these using contemporary design that sensitively responds to the traditional detailing of the existing house.
Working with the client we developed a design that expressed its timber structure internally, shaping a unique, rhythmic spatial quality. Glazing was a key element; we combined the use of folding sliding doors with casement windows and created continuity through cast stone cills and natural stone walls.
Refurbishment of the existing kitchen allowed us to ensure that the threshold between old and new was correctly detailed, resulting in two key living spaces that have a wonderful impact on the quality of the home.
