Great Horwood CofE Primary School

Creative Partnerships Scheme

Riach Architects won a Creative Partnerships competition to work with Great Horwood Primary School students to develop a design for an outdoor learning space within the school grounds.

Over a five month period Riach engaged Year Five and Six pupils with a programme of classroom sessions, covering measuring and looking, the principles of structures, forming the brief and drawing inspiration from various sources such as fiction and the surrounding environment.

A series of design workshops followed, where the young designers used sketching, drawing, model making and discussion to develop their proposals for the structure.

A willow artist assisted with the construction of the final design over a series of five hands-on sessions, with everyone getting involved. The finished structure was officially opened by the school.

“We made that whole shelter all with our little hands”
“We were creative when we did the plans and had ideas like having a window to look at the moon”
“I feel we all put something into it. I did the door. We all have a part of us there”
“I like it because you know you did a part of it”
